Short vs Long Distance Swimming to Improve Skills
Repetitive swimming over short distances allows you or your child to perfect their skills with little room for error while improving their fitness. From the perspective of a swim teacher, a smaller teaching space allows for greater supervision, better class control, and easier access to the students to be able to correct minor errors and provide feedback.
If the fundamentals of stroke are not mastered before swimming laps, there is a greater chance of the child developing bad habits as our muscle memory develops through the repetitive nature of not only correctly practicing skills, but also when we do things incorrectly.
On the flip side, it is a good idea to practice swimming longer distances to prepare for school carnivals or for safety reasons if you are continually around an aquatic environment.
